The snow keeps falling, the hills keep opening and the smiles on skiers and snowboarders just keep getting wider and wider. Fernie and Kicking Horse are the two latest resorts to fire up their lifts and welcome visitors this weekend.
Fernie, which had a preview weekend Nov. 25-26, opens for the season on Saturday and the lift line is already forming. Forming behind Greg Barrow that is. The Fernie resident has pitched his tent at the base of the Elk Chair and will be first on the chair for the 17th consecutive year.
As of Thursday afternoon, Fernie said terrain will open on the Lizard side with four chairs open: Elk, Bear, Boom and Haul Back.

A little further north, Kicking Horse at Golden will hold a preview weekend and its first gondola is up for grabs. Not be being first in line but by being lucky. The seats for the first gondola will be won via raffle with tickets being sold at the resort plaza between &:30 and 8:45 a.m Saturday. Tickets are $2 or three for $5 with all proceeds going to the Golden Food Bank.
Good on you Kicking Horse. While the winner gets to pick four friends to share the first gondola, skip the lift lines all day and have lunch at the Eagle’s Eye restaurant, the food bank gets a pre-Christmas bonus.
The Golden Eagle Express gondola along with the Stairway to Heaven and Catamount chairs will be operating but the only terrain open will be intermediate to expert: Upper Wiley Coyote, Blaster, Downshift and Little Ben.
Bowl Over, Crystal Bowl and Feuz Bowl MAY open, depending on avalanche conditions.
